Abstract

Background Stuttering has been described as a disorder in motor speech in which disruption in the timing between laryngeal, respiratory, and vocal tract rhythm of speech. It is characterized by prolongations and involuntary repetitions of sounds. Children who stutter (CWS) characterized by inability to produce sounds, with intra-phonemic disruption and involuntary silent pauses. Many studies have examined central auditory processing skills and reported impairments, yet auditory memory skills have not been adequately evaluated, leaving a gap in the available information. Aim of the study Assessing auditory memory performance and auditory memory abilities in CWS. Methods: Measuring recognition memory, memory for content, memory for sequences and auditory attention in 20 children who stutter. Performance was compared with age matched normative data. Inclusion criteria: age from 4 to 12 years old, with normal peripheral hearing and average intelligence quotient. Free from any neurological, language or psychiatric disorders. We excluded children with peripheral hearing loss, or language developmental delay, and those with neurodevelopmental disorders affecting speech. Results: Study group show deficits in auditory memory skills with relatively preserved auditory attention, with no significant association with the stuttering severity. Conclusion: CWS demonstrate reduced auditory memory performance particularly in tasks requiring content retention and sequencing, while auditory attention appeared to be relatively preserved. Incorporating auditory memory assessment into the comprehensive evaluation of CWS may provide valuable information for individualized intervention planning.
