Abstract
Background and Aim The increase in the number of Cesarean Section deliveries (CS) in the world has triggered questions about the possible long-term health consequences for the children being delivered, particularly the chances of being affected by asthma and other allergic ailments. Some prior studies suggested that CS deliveries may negatively influence immune system development due to altered microbial colonization and an increased risk of respiratory morbidities. However, trying to separate the impact of delivery methods and the maternal as well as the surroundings is a hard nut to crack. The present study aims to establish whether maternal asthma, diet, and antibiotics use during pregnancy predict the likelihood of asthma and allergic diseases in children delivered by CS, alongside other additional neonatal and environmental factors like smoking, feeding practices, and supplement intake. Methodology and key findings. It was a prospective, analytical cross-sectional study for children aged 2 to 18 years. The data was structured through the utilization of questionnaires and health records. The findings revealed that asthma in the mother was the second most predictive of the occurrence of asthma in children (adjusted OR = 2.90, 95% CI: 1.25–6.71, p = 0.013). Other elements of risk were encompassed by the factors of indoor smoking (65% vs 6.7%, p < 0.001), the possession of pets (50% vs 0%, p < 0.001), low weight at birth, limited duration of breastfeeding, use of antibiotics in the neonatal phase, and the elevated BMI of the mother. Recommendations and Conclusions. From a clinical viewpoint, this study highlights the need for remote and antenatal maternal healthcare, particularly in managing asthma, promoting a proper diet, controlling smoking, and implementing a policy during pregnancy. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of a public health approach to breastfeeding, including the delay of cow's milk-based formula and solid food feeding
