Abstract
Background Hepatitis C viral infection is endemic among Egyptian patients due to the higher prevalence among these populations. About 3% of the world’s population (170 million patients) are infected with viral C. The prevalence of HCV antibodies is 14.7% among the age group 15-59. This study is concerned with assessing the prevalence of viral C antibodies among different age groups and variable otorhinolaryngology surgical procedures for these patients. Material and Methods All patients admitted for any operative procedure should be investigated for viral C antibodies in the blood among the national survey in Egypt to control the prevention and active management of the infected person. Data from 2017 through 2019 are collected. Results A total of 1971 patients were admitted to the Hearing and Speech Institute for different otorhinolaryngology surgeries. The prevalence of anti-HCV-positive cases is 4.16%. Age group distribution of HCV-positive cases shows that the males (N (%)) represent 16 (35.6%) in the age group 20-39, 22 (48.9%) 40-59, and 7(15.5%) in the 60-79 age group in years. While in the female (N (%)) group reveals that the age group 20-39 counts 18 (48.7%), the age group 40-59 is 16 (43.2%), and the age group 60-79 is 3 (8.1%). Conclusions The seroprevalence of viral C among the Egyptian population has the same distribution among the otolaryngology patients. The need to concentrate the efforts on this promoted mode of transmission is a must to achieve the goal of Hepatitis C elimination from Egypt by 2030.
