Abstract
Background: The conventional incision adopted to for mitral valve replacement is the full sternotomy, with proved over time and experience to be a simple and safe method. Minimal invasive mitral valve surgery (Mini-MVS) is an alternative approach for elective mitral surgeries that proved over the last years to be a promising option.
Aim of the study: Assessment of the early outcome of minimally invasive mitral valve surgery with or without tricuspid surgery.
Methods: A retrospective study on 100 consecutive patients who underwent minimal invasive mitral valve surgery from January 2021 to June 2023 at National Heart Institute in Egypt.
Results: Among the study group, 66% were females and the mean age was 42.43 ± 9.56 years. The pre-operative echo: mean LVEDD was 5.26 ± 0.90 cm, mean LVESD was 3.42 ± 0.74 cm and mean EF was 63.25 ± 6.68%. The mean bypass time was 132.41 ± 33.30 minutes and the mean cross-clamp time was 94.91 ± 25.17 minutes. The mean ICU stay was 3.01 ± 1.20 days and the mean total hospital stay was 8.20 ± 2.06 days. The post-operative EF was 56.73 ± 6.38 %. The early mortality rate was 0%.
Conclusions: Mini-MVS technique showed to be a safe and effective alternative to conventional sternotomy, offers exceptional exposure to the mitral valve and enhances its aesthetic appearance. In addition, it showed fewer complications and postoperative pain, less ICU and hospital stay.
